The best-packed storage container is not necessarily the one with the least empty space. It is the one that protects your belongings, uses the space well and does not require half a day of unpacking when you need one box from the back.
Before you start loading, decide whether the container is being used as a sealed time capsule or as working storage. That one choice changes the whole layout.

1. Make an inventory before anything moves
List the main items and number your boxes. A simple note on your phone is enough: Box 1, kitchen; Box 2, books; Box 3, winter clothes. Photograph valuable or fragile items before packing them.
If you are storing business stock, use product categories or job names rather than vague labels such as “work stuff”. Future you deserves better.
2. Clean and dry everything
Dirt, food residue and trapped moisture cause far more trouble in storage than people expect. Clean furniture, appliances, garden equipment and tools before they go in. Defrost fridges and freezers, drain washing machines and allow them to dry fully.
3. Use strong, stackable boxes
Use sturdy boxes in a few consistent sizes. Fill them properly so they do not collapse, but keep the weight manageable. Books and tools belong in smaller boxes. Bedding, cushions and light household items can go in larger ones.
Seal boxes and label at least two sides, not just the top. Once they are stacked, the top label will be as useful as a chocolate fireguard.
4. Dismantle what you safely can
Take legs off tables, break down bed frames and remove shelves from units where practical. Put screws and fittings in labelled bags, then tape or tie the bag securely to the item it belongs to.
5. Protect furniture properly
Use moving blankets, clean sheets or breathable furniture covers. Avoid trapping any moisture beneath tight plastic wrapping. Protect corners and keep soft furnishings away from sharp metal edges.

6. Plan the floor before loading
Put heavy, sturdy items at the bottom. Keep weight spread across the floor rather than creating one overloaded corner. Place large furniture and appliances where they form a stable base for lighter items.
7. Build upwards carefully
Use vertical space, but do not create unstable towers. Heavy boxes go low, lighter boxes higher. Nothing should be balanced where it could fall when the doors open or when you remove another item.
8. Leave a central aisle if you need regular access
For business stock, tools, seasonal belongings or anything you may need before the container is emptied, leave a walkway. Put frequently used items near the front and create clear zones down each side.
9. Keep an “access first” area by the doors
This is the place for items you are most likely to collect: work tools, seasonal boxes, paperwork, cleaning supplies or the kettle you packed three weeks too early.
10. Use empty spaces intelligently
Fill clean suitcases, drawers and sturdy cupboards with lighter belongings. Put long items upright only when they are stable and secured. Do not cram fragile items into gaps where they will be crushed.
11. Keep prohibited or unsuitable items out
Do not store perishable food, fuel, gas bottles, flammable liquids, illegal goods, living things or anything that could leak, attract pests or create a hazard. Ask Michael before storing chemicals, machinery containing fuel or anything unusual.

12. Draw a quick map before you lock up
A rough sketch showing where the main categories are stored can save hours later. Keep the map with your inventory, take a photograph of the finished load and check that nothing is pressing against the doors.
