Moving house has a habit of feeling comfortably far away until every room is full of boxes and someone asks where the kettle has gone.
Using self-storage early can make the whole move easier. Instead of trying to pack, clean, declutter and move everything on one heroic day, you remove non-essential belongings in stages and leave yourself room to work.
Six weeks before moving day: decide what is actually moving
Walk through every room and sort belongings into four groups:
- Moving directly to the new home
- Going into temporary storage
- Being sold, donated or recycled
- Needed until moving day
This is also the point to book storage. Waiting until the chain wobbles or the removal van is outside usually limits your options.
Five weeks before: move out the easy wins
Start with things you will not need for several weeks:
- Seasonal clothes
- Books and ornaments
- Spare bedding and towels
- Sports and camping equipment
- Christmas decorations
- Garage and loft contents
The house becomes easier to clean and photograph, and the remaining packing feels far less overwhelming.
Four weeks before: deal with spare rooms and bulky furniture
Dismantle spare beds, empty unused wardrobes and move non-essential furniture into storage. Label every part and keep fittings attached to the correct item.
For protection advice, see how to store furniture in a container without damage.
Three weeks before: create a proper box system
Number boxes and label them by room and priority. A useful system is:
- A: needed immediately after the move
- B: needed within the first month
- C: safe to leave in storage until you are settled
Keep a list on your phone so you know where important items are without opening ten boxes.
Two weeks before: build the moving-day zone
Keep one clearly marked area at home for the things that must travel with you: documents, medication, chargers, basic tools, cleaning supplies, a change of clothes and the all-important tea kit.
Everything else should now be either packed, stored or actively in use.
One week before: protect appliances and final furniture
Defrost and dry freezers, drain appliances and finish dismantling large furniture. Confirm access arrangements, transport and who is helping with loading.
If you are packing a 20ft container, read how to pack it so you can still find everything.
Moving day: use storage as a buffer
Storage means the move does not have to be perfectly synchronised. You can keep surplus furniture, boxes and awkward items out of the way while you get the new home clean, safe and functional.
If completion is delayed or dates no longer line up, read the existing guide to temporary storage while waiting for completion.
After the move: do not empty storage blindly
Live in the new home for a few days before bringing everything back. Measure rooms, decide where furniture belongs and retrieve belongings in priority order.
You may discover that some items are no longer needed. That is easier to decide when the hallway is not buried beneath them.
